Tragic WASSCE Incident: Oyo Govt Reveals Father's Role in Son's Death

By Adenike Olowe

The Oyo State Government has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) student who was hit by a stray bullet in Ibadan. According to the government, the student's father was driving against traffic on Alakia Old Road when the incident occurred.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the government explained that officials from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) and the police were conducting a traffic operation on the road due to complaints about one-way traffic violations that had led to deaths and life-threatening injuries.

During the operation, the father, driving a tinted black Honda Accord Car with registration number FST 639 JU, defied the traffic direction at around 7:30 a.m. In an attempt to apprehend him, a policeman allegedly fired a shot at one of the car's tires, which missed its target and tragically hit the student.

The government described the incident as "sad, shocking, and painful" and emphasized that it was avoidable. They have assured the public that justice will be served and steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The government also urged residents to obey traffic rules and stay calm while the authorities investigate the matter.
