A heartbreaking incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State Capital, on Sunday, June 15, 2025. A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, while playing with his father's service AK-47 rifle. The 10-year-old boy, whose name has not been disclosed, stumbled upon his father's service rifle, which was left unattended. The bullet struck his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, on the back and also hit his younger brother, Emmanuel, on the hand.
The Police Inspector was immediately rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital, Awka, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His son, Emmanuel, was also treated for injuries sustained during the incident. The young boy is currently responding to treatment, but the emotional trauma of witnessing such a tragic event is still unknown.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and expressed deep sadness over the loss of one of its officers. The command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, extended condolences to the family and friends of the late inspector, wishing the injured son a speedy recovery.
