10-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Kills Police Inspector Father

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State Capital, on Sunday, June 15, 2025. A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, while playing with his father's service AK-47 rifle. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the Community and the Anambra State Police Command.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened around 9:40 pm at the family's residence. The 10-year-old boy, whose name has not been disclosed, stumbled upon his father's service rifle, which was left unattended. Curious and unaware of the dangers, the boy began fondling the rifle, accidentally pulling the trigger. The bullet struck his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, on the back and also hit his younger brother, Emmanuel, on the hand.

The Police Inspector was immediately rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital, Awka, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His son, Emmanuel, was also treated for injuries sustained during the incident. The young boy is currently responding to treatment, but the emotional trauma of witnessing such a tragic event is still unknown.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and expressed deep sadness over the loss of one of its officers. The command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, extended condolences to the family and friends of the late inspector, wishing the injured son a speedy recovery. The command has also launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case has been officially sent to the Central Police Station (CPS) in Awka for further investigation. The Police are working to determine how the service rifle was left unattended and to identify measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
