Bhoomi Chauhan, a 28-year-old Business Administration student, narrowly escaped a tragic fate when she missed her Air India flight to London Gatwick by just 10 minutes. The flight, AI171, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday, killing 241 people on board and several others on the ground.
Chauhan, who lives in Bristol with her husband, had been visiting Western India for a holiday. She arrived at the Airport at 12:20 PM local time, but "bumper-to-bumper" traffic had delayed her journey. Despite having checked in online, airline staff refused to let her complete the process, citing her late arrival.
"I was very disappointed," Chauhan recalls. "We got very angry with our driver and left the airport in frustration." While waiting to discuss a refund with her travel agent, Chauhan received the devastating news about the plane crash.
Reflecting on her narrow escape, Chauhan says, "This is totally a miracle for me." Her digital boarding pass had assigned her to Economy Class seat 36G, but fate had other plans. Chauhan's experience serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of life.
The Air India flight took off as scheduled but struggled to gain altitude, crashing into a residential area about 30 seconds into the flight. The impact claimed the lives of 241 passengers and 12 crew members, with at least eight people on the ground also losing their lives. Miraculously, one British National, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, survived the crash and is receiving treatment for injuries.
