A devastating flood in Minna, Niger State, claimed the lives of two children, a 9-year-old girl and an unidentified young boy, after a heavy downpour swept them away. The incident occurred in the Tunga Area, where the girl was accompanying her 11-year-old brother to buy soup ingredients at the market.
The children were caught off guard when the rain intensified, causing flash floods that submerged roads and drainage systems.
The girl slipped into a drainage channel, and her brother attempted to alert residents for help, but the strong currents made rescue efforts impossible.
The brother then went back to their residence to inform their parents about the tragedy.
The father was later contacted to identify his daughter's corpse, which was discovered at a tunnel on Mandela Street, over five kilometers from where she fell into the drainage. Shockingly, another young boy's body was also found alongside hers.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the incident and plans to visit the girl's family to gather more information.
The Agency's spokesman, Hussaine Ibrahim, expressed shock over the tragedy and assured the public that the Agency would investigate the incident.
A recent flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State, claimed over 206 lives and displaced thousands of people. The flood was caused by heavy rainfall and poor urban planning, which led to blocked waterways.
The State Government has promised to implement measures to prevent future flooding, including erosion control and infrastructure development.
