The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force have apprehended at least 20 individuals suspected of hacking the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The arrests were made in Abuja on Friday.
The suspects are believed to be part of a syndicate of over 100 individuals specializing in hacking examination bodies' servers, including JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
They allegedly sabotaged the computer-based test (CBT) system to discredit JAMB and discourage students from using CBT for future exams.
The suspects allegedly manipulated the system to influence high scores for special candidates who paid between ₦700,000 and ₦2 million. Several members of the syndicate reportedly own private schools and colleges, generating significant revenue from their special centers.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has denied allegations of bias or ethnic favoritism in handling the 2025 UTME results. He emphasized that the board is working to address challenges faced during the exam.
