Ekiti Court Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for Raping Stepdaughter

An Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti has jailed 56-year-old Jayeoba Oluwafemi for life for raping his 14-year-old stepdaughter. The convict was arraigned on December 4, 2020, on a one-count charge of rape.

According to the victim's testimony, Jayeoba began sexually assaulting her after her mother married him. The abuse started when the victim's mother was away, and Jayeoba would sleep at their house.

The victim narrated that on October 26, 2020, Jayeoba forcefully had sex with her, resulting in bleeding. Despite her mother's initial skepticism, the victim's consistent reports of the abuse eventually led to Jayeoba's arrest after she reported the incident to a woman who helped her lodge a complaint.

During the trial, the prosecution presented six witnesses and submitted Jayeoba's statement and a medical report as evidence. Jayeoba's defense team called one witness, but the judge found the prosecution's case stronger.

Justice Adekunle Adeleye found Jayeoba guilty, stating that the prosecution had proven the offense of rape beyond reasonable doubt. The judge sentenced Jayeoba to life imprisonment, citing Section 31(2) of the Child's Rights Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
