A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) has lost his life in a violent attack on a police station in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State. The attack occurred on Sunday evening, following widespread protests over the death of a suspect in custody.
According to the police, Abdullahi Musa, a motorcycle mechanic, was arrested on Sunday evening after numerous complaints about his reckless riding, allegedly under the influence of drugs. While in custody, Musa became weak and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning.
News of Musa's death sparked chaos, leading hoodlums to attack the Rano police division. During the protest, the station was looted, and parts of it were set ablaze, along with two vehicles.
Additionally, 10 vehicles were vandalized. The DPO sustained serious injuries in the attack and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Kano police command has arrested 27 suspects in connection with the attack. The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene and paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, Mohammed Umar. Bakori has directed a thorough investigation into the incident and appealed for calm while the investigation continues.
The state police spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa, reaffirmed the command's commitment to maintaining law and order in the state. Kiyawa urged residents to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities during the investigation.
